Outdoor Kitchens

Outdoor Kitchens

An increasing number of people are looking for new and innovative ways to utilize their outdoor space. Many of them are considering building an outdoor kitchen in their backyard. These kitchens are a great way to get out of the four walls and have some fun. People who like to entertain and host dinner parties find outdoor kitchens to be particularly useful. They can also be a place where you can just relax and spend a great evening with your family.

We at Outdoor Improvement have observed that our clients in Eagan and the nearby towns of Minneapolis, Burnsville, Savage and Woodbury are considering installation of outdoor kitchens in their backyards.

Our long term clients in Eden Prairie, Saint Paul, Apple Valley, Lakeville and Maplewood regularly make enquiries about these features. Over the years, we have gained experience in installing outdoor kitchens and know what materials to use and how to design them.

Designing Durable Outdoor Kitchens

Many worry about the expense involved in building outdoor kitchens. They can be expensive if you don’t have a proper plan in place. We advise our clients about their options after taking their budget requirements into consideration. Many factors decide the cost of outdoor kitchens, and you must plan accordingly.

  • Materials used in construction: You can make your outdoor kitchen out of concrete blocks, brick, wood frames or steel frames. Kitchens made from concrete and brick are able to withstand the outdoor conditions better but they are more expensive. Wood frames have a risk of fire and can degrade over time. Steel framing is more resilient and can withstand outdoor conditions better.

  • Materials used as veneers: Veneers make your outdoor kitchens look good. You can pick brick, stone or stucco, according to your preference. Stucco is the least expensive while stone falls on the other end of the price spectrum. Both brick and stone are durable and look great. Stucco sometimes tends to look unappealing and needs to be utilized carefully.

  • Outdoor Kitchens Layout: The kitchen layout also affects the price of the structure. The least expensive option is the standalone counter or an island. It doesn’t provide a separate area for preparing food but for those who intend to use their outdoor kitchens sparingly, this would do. You can also build an L-shaped counter, which is the most popular and the most economical option. If your budget permits it, you can consider U-shaped, the split-level or the 3/4th square counters, as well.

  • Appliance and Accessories: Aside from the basic construction, appliances like grills, sinks, refrigerators, etc., are needed in your outdoor kitchen. You would also require electrical and gas piping, which would add to your expense. Countertops and general lighting as well as fans need to be considered too.

There’s a lot involved in outdoor kitchen design but most of our clients consider the end result worth the effort and expense.
